Abstract

This article describes an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system which has dynamic adjust/study method of writer's personal propensity/ characteristics in handwriting without pre-registration of them. The system automatically creates templates ('correct' letter patterns that are used to compare with letters to be recognized) from writer's actual letters just before recognition. Created templates improve recognition ratio of other letters filled up the same sheet by the same writer.

      This article describes an Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
system which has dynamic adjust/study method of writer's personal
propensity/ characteristics in handwriting without pre-registration
of them.  The system automatically creates templates ('correct'
letter patterns that are used to compare with letters to be
recognized) from writer's actual letters just before recognition.
Created templates improve recognition ratio of other letters filled
up the same sheet by the same writer.

      Fig. 1 shows general OCR system that uses template : (A) The
system compares all letters filled up the OCR sheet with general
template.

      Fig. 2 shows a sample implementation of this system :  (1)
System engineer of OCR application designs OCR sheets including
special field which is used to study by the system (e.g., '0' through
'9' handwriting field),  (2) Each writer fills up the field according
to the predefined rule (e.g., writing '0' through '9' in usual
character),  (3) The system creates new templates for the writer from
letters on the special field, (4) The system recognizes other letters
on the sheet using created templates,  (5) The system deletes created
templates to avoid undesirable effects for recognition of the next
OCR sheet.
