Abstract

A method for guiding an operator in the use of an External High-Capacity Input/Output Station (EHCIO) on an Automated Tape Library (ATL) is disclosed. The operator is guided through a series of concise and simple panels using a Graphical User Interface (GUI). The GUI eliminates the need for the program to continually monitor state of the EHCIO.

Graphical User Interface for External High-Capacity Input/Output
Station on an Automated Tape Library Library

A method for guiding an operator in the use of an External
High-Capacity Input/Output Station (EHCIO) on an Automated Tape
Library (ATL) is disclosed.  The operator is guided through a series
of concise and simple panels using a Graphical User Interface (GUI).
The GUI eliminates the need for the program to continually monitor
state of the EHCIO.

The EHCIO can be both an input station or an output station,
depending upon the operator's needs.

To use the EHCIO station as an input station the operator
interfaces with the GUI.  The GUI asks the operator if the station
needs to be unlocked.  Once the station is unlocked, the GUI tells
the operator to insert cartridges into the station.  The operator
uses the GUI to tell the ATL to use the station as an input station.
The ATL then inserts the cartridges that are in the EHCIO into the
library.

The operator uses the GUI to set the EHCIO up as an output
station.  The GUI asks the operator if the station needs to be
unlocked.  Once the station is unlocked, the GUI prompts the operator
to remove cartridges that have been ejected to the station.  When the
the output operation is complete, the operator uses the GUI to tell
the ATL that it can use the station as an output station.

The status of the EHCIO station is monitored only when the
operator indicates the need via...
