Pointing Device using a Strain Sensitive Wire Bobbin

      Disclosed  is  a  design for a transducer utilizing  coils  of
a strain  sensitive wire material to sense magnitude and  direction
of applied force.

      In the design, two or more coils of strain sensitive wire (1)
are wrapped around a top frame (2) and bottom frame (3); the top  and
bottom frames are provided with a means of preloading the bobbins to
prevent slack in the wire, a spring (4) or elastomer material for
example.  Pressure applied to the top frame (2) or button (5) results
in a change in strain and electrical resistance  in  the wire;  the
resistance change is measured by electrical circuitry and  converted
to cursor movement through algorithms.  Materials with  high strain
sensitivity such as constantin or nichrome  may be used for the wire
material.
