Abstract

Described is a front cover assembly comprised of a number of molded thermo-plastic parts, which together provide an aesthetically pleasing front cover for a computer housing, along with key functional features including separate doors for Direct Access Storage Devices (DASDs) and and PCMCIA devices (removable card assemblies built to the standards of the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) and built-in features allowing buttons, keylocks, lenses, keys, plastic strips, latches and doors, to be easily snapped into the cover.

Plastic Front Cover Assembly

      Described is a front cover assembly comprised of a number of
molded thermo-plastic parts, which together provide an aesthetically
pleasing front cover for a computer housing, along with key
functional features including separate doors for Direct Access
Storage Devices (DASDs) and and PCMCIA devices (removable card
assemblies built to the standards of the Personal Computer Memory
Card International Association) and built-in features allowing
buttons, keylocks, lenses, keys, plastic strips, latches and doors,
to be easily snapped into the cover.

      Fig. 1 is an exploded isometric view of the front cover
assembly as viewed from in front and above.  This assembly includes
front bezel 10,  door support rail 12, DASD door 14, on/off button
16, button spring 18,  keylock 20, and  keyholder 22 with keys 24.
Optional features, including decorative left strip 26, decorative
right strip 28, and PCMCIA door 30, which snap into the assembly from
the front, may be varied together to alter the appearance of the
front cover, as different colors and molded designs are applied to
these features.

      Fig. 2 is an exploded isometric view of the front cover
assembly of Fig.  1 as viewed from behind and above, showing various
internal features, such as cover latch 32, pawl assembly 34 and two
lenses 36.  This front cover assembly is configured to be a permanent
part of an enclosure with a sheet metal cover (not shown) extending
rearward, in the direction of arrow 38, from an upper edge 40 and
from side edges 42 of front bezel 10.  Flexible snap latches 44 are
provided along these edges to engage corresponding surfaces in the
sheet metal cover, holding the cover assembly in place as part of a
system enclosure.

      This enclosure is removable from the system (not shown) by
frontward movement, opposite the direction of arrow 38.  This
movement is prevented, i.e., the enclosure is held in place on the
system, by means of cover latch 32, which includes a latching surface
