Standoff for Processor Upgrade Card

      Described is a standoff forming an assembly guide, a support
and a standoff to facilitate the field installation of a processor
upgrade card.

      The Figure is an exploded isometric view showing the processor
card 10, the standoff 12, and a planar (system) board 14.  To perform
an upgrade of the system, a new processor card 10 is installed on the
planar 14, with an upward-extending connector 16 of planar board 14
engaging a connector (not shown) extending downward from card 10.

      Before processor card 10 is installed, standoff 12 is snapped
on planar board 14 by means of a pair of flexible snaps 18 extending
downward, as a part of standoff 12, to be snapped into place in holes
20 extending through planar board 14.  Standoff 12 determines the
spacing between processor card 10 and planar board 14 by the distance
between the lower surfaces of tabs 22 and the upper surfaces of tabs
24.

      As processor card 10 is subsequently installed, the edges of
this card contact ramp surfaces 26 of flexible arms 28.  The downward
motion of card 10 causes these arms 28 to deflect outward, while
providing a force guiding the card into place.  When card 10 is fully
installed, arms 28 return inward, holding the card in place by means
of latching surfaces  30.
