Database National Language Support

Disclosed is a database implementation and application program
used to provide National Language Support (NLS) for an Electronic
Parts Catalog.  This design provides flexibility and efficiency in
data authoring, database design and application programming.

The datbase used for this discussion supports an automotive
parts catalog located on CD-ROM.  The CD-ROM data consists of
database tables for searching and displaying parts information in the
form of an image display on a PC terminal.

Database Description - National Language Support (NLS) data
will be present in the EPC database in two forms based on how the
data will be used.  The first form will consist of data used to
perform keyword searches.  The second form consists of descriptive
information associated with a particular part in the catalog.  This
data is not used as part of the search key, but is accessed for
display purposes only.

For this discussion, only two database tables, ("Part Name
Keyword Table" and "Part Name Description Table") will be used to
describe the implementation of NLS support.  In an actual
application, several tables would be used supporting a variety of
data searches.  The same techniques described here to access the NLS
data would be used on all of the tables.

Part Name Keyword Table - As seen in Table 1, all keywords are
placed in a single column and a language identifier is used to access
only the keywords for a given language.  For example, if language Id
"01" is used along with the keyword "valve", the search request would
return only the part numbers (0001, 0005, and 0008) associated with
the English word "valve".

New languages are added by adding the keyword records into the
existing database for the language needed.  A unique language Id
would be used to identify this language to the application program.
In Table 2, support for German has been added to the table.
Languages are deleted from this table by removing the associated
records for that language to save space in the database.  Both
additions and deletions can be made by adding and deleting data items
to the existing database design.

Since the database design does not change, the application
interface also remains the same.  This means no changes would have to
be made to the application software to support the addition and
deletion of languages.

Part Name Description Table - As mentioned above, the Part Name
Description Table contains data...
