Remote Operation of Power-On Self Test and the Reference Partition

      Disclosed is provision for the remote operation of Power-On
Self Test (POST) procedures and reference partition programs, which
include Setup, Diagnostics, and a variety of utilities.  A system is
provided with an ability to connect with a remote system or terminal
before proceeding with the operation of POST and the reference
partition.

      The Figure shows the operation of a sequence, within the POST
testing process, related to Remote Mode operation.  An identical path
is followed during cold and warm starts.  To ensure system security,
any required password activity is completed in block 10, during an
early portion of the POST process, before the system is allowed to
proceed to Remote Mode operation.  Next, in block 12, the Remote Mode
invocation is provided, for example, in the form of a simple menu or
a key sequence prompted by moving the cursor to the upper-right
corner of the screen.  The use of this corner is compatible with the
upper-right corner prompt for the Reference Partition boot in a warm
start.  The Remote Mode may be invoked through a key sequence, such
as Ctrl-Alt-Home, in response to this prompt, causing an affirmative
decision in block 14, so that the Remote Mode is enabled in block 16.
If the remote mode is not invoked, a negative decision in block 14
causes traditional POST testing to be begun in block 18.
