Abstract

Programs are disclosed that are used to generate software packages that can be installed by the installp command on an AIX* system. The AIX Development Environment (ADE) and LITE Packaging requirements have divided the base operating system into several hundred separate packages. With the increased number of packaging data files a simplified format was needed for the packaging data. Tools were required to convert the packaging data into installable packages that the AIX installp command could process.

Packaging Tools for the ADE Build Environment

Programs are disclosed that are used to generate software
packages that can be installed by the installp command on an AIX*
system.  The AIX Development Environment (ADE) and LITE Packaging
requirements have divided the base operating system into several
hundred separate packages.  With the increased number of packaging
data files a simplified format was needed for the packaging data.
Tools were required to convert the packaging data into installable
packages that the AIX installp command could process.

The following tools support the generation of software product
install and update images for AIX and AIX-based products.

The adeinv command converts the package inslist data into
separate files containing size and inventory information.  The
inventory data is used by the AIX installp command to populate or
update the Vital Products Database (VPD).  The size information is
used to calculate the amount of temporary working space required for
a successful installation.  An apply list is created that lists the
files included on the install media.

The adecopyright command generates appropriate copyright data
from a set of copyright keywords which are maintained and provided by
the package owner.  A keyword data file is used to expand the
keywords into a legal copyright file during the package build.  Any
changes to the copyright information are made to the data file.  The
