File Pack Spacer Manufacturing Tooling

      The following invention illustrates a concept and embodiment
for a fixture to hold spacer rings during vendor manufacturing,
shipment, wash operations, and file line fixturing use, to simplify
build and eliminate damage due to spacers touching each other or
other items touching the clamping surfaces of the spacers.

      As shown in Fig. 1, the spacer holder 1 is configured of a
piece of molded plastic utilizing a living hinge 2, shoulders 3,
individual spring elements 4, providing retaining force and
compliance for each spacer 5.

      In use, the holder 1 is folded in half and inserted into the
spacers 5 which are fixtured at a given pitch.  The holder 1 is then
activated by pushing it over center along the hinge 2, until stopping
against the shoulders 3.  This causes the spring elements 4 to engage
the inside corners of the spacer 5 holding them vertical, rigid, and
in location while the reaction force locks the holder 1 in this over
center position.  To deactivate, the assembly is fixtured in the disk
pack build tooling, the holder 1 snapped back into the original
configuration and withdrawn, leaving the spacers 5 in the desired
position for assembly.

      As shown in Fig. 2, in shipping, the tool 1 will be placed into
a vacuum formed tray 6 which will allow for flipped installation of
the holder 1.  This method will aid in the higher packing density due
