Abstract

An interactive filtering mechanism for a distributed browse facility is disclosed. An operator specifies a distributed file and some filtering criteria. The filtering criteria selects a subset of the distributed file that is to be used for the browse session. Interactive browse requests such as Scroll, Find, Top, Bottom, etc. for the distributed file are processed against only the subset of records selected.

Interactive Filtering Scheme for a Distributed Browse Facility

An interactive filtering mechanism for a distributed browse
facility is disclosed.  An operator specifies a distributed file and
some filtering criteria.  The filtering criteria selects a subset of
the distributed file that is to be used for the browse session.
Interactive browse requests such as Scroll, Find, Top, Bottom, etc.
for the distributed file are processed against only the subset of
records selected.

The Figure depicts this interactive distributed browse
filtering scheme.  An operator on the local system A issues a browse
request for distributed system B's file X, and supplies some
filtering criteria.
  1.  A request is sent to the distributed system B to update the
filtering criteria pool P for the requesting operator.
o  Filtering criteria pool P is used by filter F when the
operator interacts with file X with interactive requests
such
as Scroll, Find, Top, Bottom, etc.
  2.  The local system A sends a request to the remote system B to
      initiate the browse session.
o  Filter F selects from all records only those which pass the
filtering criteria pool specification P for the requesting
         operator.
  3.  A screen of data which satisfies the operator's browse request
is
      presented on system A.
