Abstract

Disclosed is the method of manipulation of the super-class of action objects for a standard user interface control to be used in a family of graphical user interface applications. The direct manipulation is between three different parts of the primary window: the Actions area, the Template Area, and the Work Area. Actions are taken from the action palette to one of these other areas, or selected from the action palette in a target/source type of interaction. In addition, objects can be taken from one of the screen areas to the action palette.

Direct Manipulation Control for Action Objects

      Disclosed is the method of manipulation of the super-class of
action objects for a standard user interface control to be used in a
family of graphical user interface applications.  The direct
manipulation is between three different parts of the primary window:
the Actions area, the Template Area, and the Work Area.  Actions are
taken from the action palette to one of these other areas, or
selected from the action palette in a target/source type of
interaction.  In addition, objects can be taken from one of the
screen areas to the action palette.

      Unique is the variety of behaviors provided in the direct
manipulation control.  Behaviors associated with the actions in the
Actions Palette Object Area include: 1) dragging and dropping the
action to an object in the Work Area, 2) dragging and dropping the
action to an object in the Templates area, 3) dragging and dropping
an object from the Work Area onto an action, and 4) clicking on an
object from the Work Area and then an action in the Action Palette
Object area.  These behaviors provide flexibility of user
interaction,
covering a wide range of user expectations for interaction.

      This general direct manipulation model may be used in any
object-oriented application.  Unique is that the actions are objects
that have bi-directional behavior, that is, drag and drop may be
accomplished by dropping an action on an object, or by dropping an
