Subobjects and Enhanced Object Context Sensitivity

      A method is disclosed for providing a visual "handle" which a
user can use as a target of direct manipulation or source of direct
manipulation.  This target, called a "Replace Well", contains a
visual to represent the subobject.

      This visual handle also allows an object that is normally
considered atomic to present itself in a context that subdivides it
by task.  That is, a different pop-up menu than the normal object
menu can be presented depending on the Replace Well from which the
pop-up is requested.  The choices presented on each pop-up menu can
take advantage of the further context information represented by the
Replace Well to limit the choices to those that are pertinent to the
task.  Such a task might be to facilitate replacement or modification
of the subobject.  The Figure displays a Replace Well.
  The user can:
  1.  Drag similar subobjects (time or place) to the Replace Well
      to replace them within the Event object.
  2.  Drag the time or place from the Replace Well for the purpose
      of sharing it with another Event object.
  3.  Use the Replace Well pop-up menu to change the object within
      it.  This pop-up menu is different than the normal object
      pop-up menu in that it provides a Replace with option to
      speed quick replacements with other objects; for example,
      default times (Lunch, Dinner, Morning meeting) or default...
