Abstract

An advanced Speech Navigation system for windowing systems uses common vocabularies across differing application components to facilitate navigation of applications. Because a specific command may be applicable to several components simultaneously, the user may be unable to determine which control will respond to his voice command and what mode that control is in.

Window Highlighting Prompt to Indicate Target and Mode for Spoken
Command Input

An advanced Speech Navigation system for windowing systems uses
common vocabularies across differing application components to
facilitate navigation of applications.  Because a specific command
may be applicable to several components simultaneously, the user may
be unable to determine which control will respond to his voice
command and what mode that control is in.

Utilizing information provided by the Windowing System, a
graphical rendering using geometrical shapes of various sizes,
styles, and colors is used to highlight the object which is the
primary focus of speech input.  Spoken commands which are common to
several "peer" controls will first be sent to the object with the
primary focus.  In addition, Window Controls may have certain modes.
For example, command versus dictation.  Highlighting may also be used
to indicate which state is in control.

An "action/Mode Focus" highlighting systemis claimed which consists
of:
o  A visual indication through graphic display to alert a user to
the target of a voice command
o  A visual indication to indicate what mode a control is in for a
     voice action.
