Abstract

Disclosed is a method for showing the user the effects of an error that occurs while using a notebook control. In past products, the error message displayed when the error was first detected. When an error message is displayed at the time the error is first detected, the user cannot determine how the error will affect the use of the application. The error does not always mean that the application is not usable. A way is needed to emphasize to the user the page of a notebook control that is affected by an error condition and the controls that are on the page.

Display of Error Message at Appropriate Time for User

Disclosed is a method for showing the user the effects of an
error that occurs while using a notebook control.  In past products,
the error message displayed when the error was first detected.  When
an error message is displayed at the time the error is first
detected, the user cannot determine how the error will affect the use
of the application.  The error does not always mean that the
application is not usable.  A way is needed to emphasize to the user
the page of a notebook control that is affected by an error condition
and the controls that are on the page.

The solution is to wait to display the error message until the
user wants to display the page of the notebook that the error
affects.  When a page affected by the error is selected, the error
message displays and the affected controls are disabled.  This helps
users understand how the error affects their use of the application.

This concept can be expanded beyond the notebook paradigm to
include usage with any application type that contains different areas
where error conditions can occur.

This concept is unique because it:

o   Provides a better visual cue of how the error affects the
    application.

o   Displays errors at an appropriate time.

o   Emphasizes the exact location of the error and provides a quicker
    solution to the error.
