Information Log Display Utility for Personal Computers

Described is a software implementation that provides an
information log utility for Personal Computers (PCs), such as the IBM
PS/2*.

The utility is designed primarily to provide service personnel
the ability to examine the contents of Non-Volatile Random Access
Memory (NVRAM) and to display a listing of error information so as to
be able to effectively diagnose failed parts.

Typically, run-time errors, such as memory parity errors,
adapter card errors and Direct Memory Access (DMA) bus time-out
errors, which may occur during the operation of a PC are saved in the
NVRAM by means of a handler, such as the ABIOS NMI.

The concept described herein is designed as an aid in the
determination of the source of errors.  It is an information log
utility that provides a means to examine the contents of the Advanced
Basic Input Output System (ABIOS) error log and to display the types
of errors that have occurred.  For example, the output of the utility
will list: the slot number of the Input/Output (I/O) channel check;
the arbitration level of the DMA timeout; and the type of parity
error, such as cache vs planar.

The Figure illustrates a typical listing of information that
the software can retrieve and display from the ABIOS NMI error log.
