In-Place Calibration of Optical Disks

      A method for in-place calibration is disclosed.  The optical
drive examines the space for writing, and if enough room exists,
calibrates in the area to be written rather in the calibration zone.

      The drive should decide, based on the space required for
writing, whether to seek to the calibration zone or calibrate in
place.  If the command requires the writing of several consecutive
sectors (say 17), then those sectors should be used.  Only if the
write is of too few sectors or the sectors are not sequential should
the calibration zone be used.
