Abstract

Adhesive formulations that are benign to the head/disk interface are disclosed. Photosensitive epoxy-based adhesives containing less than or equal to 25 wt% of a suitable flexibilizer, such that the glass transition temperature following ultraviolet (UV) exposure is in excess of 60 C, are compatible with both the disk and enclosure metallurgy.

      Adhesive formulations that are benign to the head/disk

containing less than or equal to 25 wt% of a suitable flexibilizer,
such that the glass transition temperature following ultraviolet (UV)
exposure is in excess of 60 C, are compatible with both the disk and
enclosure metallurgy.

      Outgassing of corrosive components from adhesives used in the
fabrication of hard disk drives has resulted in file failures.
Limiting the volatility of these outgassing species by sundry process
modifications has met with marginal success.  Epoxy-based adhesives
that contain less than or equal to 25 wt% of a flexibilizer, such
that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the cured material is
greater than 60-65C, are non-corrosive within the disk enclosure.

Adhesive formulations that demonstrate the concept are illustrated in
the Table.
