Abstract

The Dependency Graph Specification Language used in the Parallel Job (PJ) system is used to specify the dependency among nodes of a parallel job. One envisions a scenario where a program has been converted into many small subprograms, some of which can be run in parallel. However, some of these subprograms depend on the results of other of these subprograms, so there is a partial ordering imposed on the execution of the subprograms. These partial-ordering contraints are referred to as dependencies, e.g., some subprograms depend on other subprograms. Given the list of dependencies, the general scheduling program PJ executes some of the subprograms in parallel while assuring that none of the dependencies are violated.
