File Leak Detection Process and Apparatus

      Described is a process and apparatus used in detecting leakage
of seals, screw locations or other file base assembly abnormalities
prior to the final assembly stage of the file.

      The Figure shows a molded polyurethane seal 1 which is attached
to a linear thruster 2 for insertion into a file base casting 3.
This polyurethane seal 1 is molded to best conform to the casting
shapes and designed offsets.  The inserted portions of the seal 1,
including a motor pillow 4 and an actuator pillow 5, are designed to
blow up like balloons once the thruster 2 has the polyurethane sealed
on the outside of the casting 3.  This creates the necessary sealing
for the open orifices of the casting 3.  The only other hole that is
not closed is a crashstop insertion hole 6 which is then used to
perform the test.  The crashstop hole 6 is on the bottom side of the
file in the assembly and is also sealed by a small piece of
polyurethane 7 with a tube 8 which pumps in the gas that is used for
testing.

      The test consists of inserting calibrated pressure through the
tube 8 into the casting 3, and monitoring the gas flow required to
maintain the leak test pressure.  This is the leak rate.

      In process, this machine works on one switch which allows the
thruster 2 to insert the polyurethane seal 1, the polyurethane seal 1
then blows up to seal the holes, then the casting 3 is pressurized
