A computer system is described that uses automatic performance evaluation tools to determine which systems enhancements are required to maintain acceptable system performance and provide the most cost effective solution. The computer system could automatically generate the order for system enhancements.

Computer System that Determines Hardware Required and Allows Ordering

      A computer system is described that uses automatic performance
evaluation tools to determine which systems enhancements are required
to maintain acceptable system performance and provide the most cost
effective solution.  The computer system could automatically generate
the order for system enhancements.

      The computer system could have a set of utilities that measure
current system performance and determine where the performance
bottlenecks are.  This function could be implemented either with
conventional programming, or with a neural network system.  Once the
performance bottlenecks are identified, either current bottlenecks or
projected bottlenecks based on user supplied information, the system
could determine what, if any, additional hardware is required to
reduce or eliminate the problem.

      Once the type of additional hardware required is identified,
the computer could determine the exact part numbers that can be used.
Some information on available equipment could be kept on the system,
but more accurate and timely information could be obtained from the
equipment supplier by an automatic query to the supplier's computer.

      Determination of which additional hardware should be ordered
could be done with conventional programming, but an expert system
environment would allow the decision techniques to be updated more
easily.  Factors that influence the choice of equipment may include:
 o   Equipment capacity required
 o   Price/Performance of equipment meeting capacity requirement
 o   Budget available for equipment
 o   Availability of equipment
 o   Space available
 o   Power available
 The computer system could be provided with several levels of
ordering
authority:
 o   Make recommendation, including:
     -   Alternative solutions
     -   Cost and performance of recommendation in comparison with
        alternatives
     -   Provide the ability to electronically place order of
        recommendation or selected alternative
     -   Waiting for some period of time and rechecking if new
        equipment is available
 o   Make "bottom line"  recommendation:
     -   Give cost and description why needed
     -   Allow choice of electronic order immediately
     -   Providing inform...
