Abstract

Disclosed is a device called the Micro Spindle, which consists of a plurality of spindles arranged in either a linear or two dimensional array that is designed to enable the simultaneous drilling of closely spaced holes on a printed circuit board or other similar material. The design concepts, shown in Fig. 1, enables drill to drill placement to be within 0.100 inches. This spacing is significantly closer than the 4.0 inch minimum commercially available and the 1.5 inch minimum currently used on some IBM designed tools. The spindles employ a specially designed collet and drill bit that permit the extremely close spacing of the drill bit center lines. arrays depending on the geometric demands of the circuit board design
or the hole pattern desired in whatever material is being drilled.

      The micro spindles are driven by a central electrical drive
motor which is coupled to a planetary transmission as shown in Fig.
3.  From the planetary transmission power is provided to each
