Illustrated Placeholders for Slider Controls in a Multimedia Environment

      A method is described which identifies a new mechanism for
Multimedia to position the current view of the data to a precise
location in time, with a high degree of repeatable accuracy.

      This mechanism proposes a method of graphically tagging the
time scale which represents the multimedia data.  These icon-sized
tags or "placeholders" act something like bookmarks.  They may
contain:
  o  An iconized image of the video frame at the tagged location (for
      video or animation data)
  o  A descriptive text label
  o  A graphic chosen by the user (e.g., a stop sign, arrow,
      exclamation point etc.
  o  Categories of tags, for instance one category for sound, another
      for animation and another for text, or script.

The user can select whichever content is most descriptive and helpful
for each location.

      The illustration shows the invention in conjunction with a
slider control, which is one possible time scale representation.
This
design is equally applicable to other time line representations which
may be developed.

      The placeholders are placed above or below the time scale, and
if many are located close together, the system should cascade them so
that all are visible.  Vertical lines connect the placeholder with
the precise point in the time scale which it represents.
