Abstract

This article describes an Automatic Diagnostic Method of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which mounted in Personal Computers or Engineering Workstations. When the user turns power off the PC or Workstation, an electricity failure condition is started in Power Supply automatically to check the UPS backup system function. The result is saved in a Non-Volatile memory. So the user can know the UPS backup system functioned correctly or not by checking the result with start-up program, when he turns power on next time.

Automatic Diagnostic of Internal Uninterruptible Power Supply

      This article describes an Automatic Diagnostic Method of
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which mounted in Personal
Computers or Engineering Workstations.  When the user turns power off
the PC or Workstation, an electricity failure condition is started in
Power Supply automatically to check the UPS backup system function.
The result is saved in a Non-Volatile memory.  So the user can know
the UPS backup system functioned correctly or not by checking the
result with start-up program, when he turns power on next time.

      The Figure shows the example flow of this diagnostic method.
When the user push the power-off switch (1), the power control system
makes the power supply unit in an equivalent condition with
electricity failure (2).  If the UPS functions normally, the power
supply output DC Voltages continuously by UPS backup.  Then the power
control system saves the result in a Non-Volatile memory after 3 or 4
seconds (3).  If it does not function, the power control system can
not save the result because the DC voltages for the power control
system are terminated.  After checking the UPS function, the power
control system terminates the power supply (4).

      When the user turns power on next time, a start-up program
checks the result in a Non-Volatile memory automatically.  This
Diagnostic method does not need any special operations by operators
nor service engineers.
