Software Library Management User Interface, using Versioning

A method is described as to how a graphical user interface can
present the contents of a software library management system, that
uses versioning as a key aspect of that graphical user environment.

Fig. 1 shows the structure of the proposed user interface.  The
approach uses a main object-centric window that is version-free and
has the ability to launch off of this main window into a window
showing the associated non-versioned files or the associated
versioned files.

Each object in the main window specifies a family or container
in which the user's files can be found.  These objects can hold just
the name of the family (enough to show non-versioned aspects of that
family), or they can contain enough information to open up a specific
version of that family's data.  If enough of a version is specified
for a given icon, then when that object is opened, another window is
opened to show the contents of that family for the version that was
previously specified.  The window shows all information requested, of
all types, using any hierarchy that is in place, with any filter
criteria a user has requested.  Thus, if the user requests to see all
information for this given version, all contents of that version, of
as many different types as are contained, are shown in the resulting
window (Fig. 2).  If not enough of a version is specified, a window
is opened showing the contained files fo...
