Abstract

Short development timescales mean that the process of design and manufacture must converge. In practice this means that whilst one level of a design is being manufactured the next set of modifications is being designed. There exists therefore a requirement to establish the current hardware and software state of a monitor or a number of monitors simultaneously. An example of this would be the control of rework levels during manufacture.

      Short development timescales mean that the process of design
and manufacture must converge.  In practice this means that whilst
one level of a design is being manufactured the next set of
modifications is being designed.  There exists therefore a
requirement to establish the current hardware and software state of a
monitor or a number of monitors simultaneously.  An example of this
would be the control of rework levels during manufacture.

      In addition if the same information were available in the field
the response time for a customer could be significantly reduced.
Monitors shipped to a customer are occasionally the subject of post
manufacturing modification.  Establishing the new level on any
subsequent field problem may be difficult.  This is because the
hardware level of that particular part number may not be updated
pending further modification.  If hardware level information can be
accessed quickly and without disturbing the system, field engineers
would have a useful tool at their disposal.

      To solve this problem, an information screen can be provided
which can be accessed without disturbing the monitor.  This screen
can be generated independently of the host PC.

      The information screen of the monitor can be accessed without
dismantling the unit by establishing a communications link with the
micro controller in the monitor.  This communication is achieved
using an infra red remote control.  However, this could also be done
using a membrane keypad mounted on the bezel.  The advantage of the
