Abstract

Disclosed is a motor flange geometry that improves the flatness of the disk that contacts the flange in a clamped disk pack. This geometry changes the disk/flange contact from surface contact to line contact.

Tapered Flange on Motor Hub for Fixed-Disk Drives

Disclosed is a motor flange geometry that improves the flatness
of the disk that contacts the flange in a clamped disk pack.  This
geometry changes the disk/flange contact from surface contact to line
contact.

Line contact is achieved by tapering the flange surface.  The
slope of the taper must be great enough to ensure that manufacturing
tolerances for the taper do not allow multiple radii contact with the
disk (Figure).
