Abstract

Described is a glass disk which has a reflection preventive coating surface. A glass disk is used in a Flying Height Tester. Flying Height Tester measures a gap between a glass disk and a flying head by detecting intensity of the reflection from the head. This reflection intensity includes reflection from the disk surface as a noise if there is no treatment on the disk. This noise disturbs the flying height test.

Preventive Coating of Reflection on Glass Disk

      Described is a glass disk which has a reflection preventive
coating surface.  A glass disk is used in a Flying Height Tester.
Flying Height Tester measures a gap between a glass disk and a flying
head by detecting intensity of the reflection from the head.  This
reflection intensity includes reflection from the disk surface as a
noise if there is no treatment on the disk.  This noise disturbs the
flying height test.

      Reflection preventive coating on a glass disk makes it possible
to reduce the reflection noise caused from the disk surface, and
improves the measurement of the Head Flying Height test.  As a result
of this treatment of reflection preventive coating, the noise can be
reduced from 4% to 1%.

      The Figure shows an example of the measurement of the flying
height test using a coated disk.  Head 1 is flying on a rotated glass
disk 2.  The head surface is lighted through a glass disk, an
objective lens 3 ,and a half mirror 4 with a white light source 5.
Detector 6 detects intensity of the reflection from the head surface.
This reflection preventive coat can reduce the reflection on a glass
disk efficiently.
