Abstract

Disclosed is a method for providing feedback to a request, made in a windowing environment, without changing the shape of the mouse. The usual technique, changing the arrow shaped mouse to an hourglass shaped mouse, may cause the user to think that other actions cannot be performed in any window until the cursor returns to the arrow shape.

"Working" Feedback in Multitasking Window

Disclosed is a method for providing feedback to a request, made
in a windowing environment, without changing the shape of the mouse.
The usual technique, changing the arrow shaped mouse to an hourglass
shaped mouse, may cause the user to think that other actions cannot
be performed in any window until the cursor returns to the arrow
shape.

When a request is submitted in a window, the following message
will appear in the window message area:  "WORKING".  (Other messages
could be substituted for the word "WORKING").  The mouse cursor
retains its usual arrow shape, and the user can perform other actions
in that window or other windows while the message is displayed.  The
message disappears when the request is completed.
