Combined Picker/Cartridge Opener for Optical Library

The critical features in an optical library are time-to-ready
after a user requests a file and loader life.

Inside an optical library, there are three items of interest to
this article; the optical disk cartridges, the picker for moving the
cartridges, and the drives that the cartridges are inserted into.
The cartridges hold the optical media, and contain a sliding shutter
that allows access to the media by the drive.  The picker will select
a cartridge, move it to the drive and insert it.  The drive has a
loader mechanism that opens the shutter as the cartridge is inserted,
then loads the media down onto a spindle and begins spin-up and data
accessing.

      In this article, the library and drives are changed as follows;
1) the picker is designed with the shutter opening mechanism
included, 2) the loader mechanism is removed from the drive
completely, and 3) the drive positioned such that the picker can load
the media directly down onto the spindle.

This has advantages over the current library in that the
loading mechanism is removed from the drive.  Optical drives are
Field Replaceable Units (FRU) that cannot have the loader replaced in
the field on failure.  The picker/shutter opener mechanism is a FRU.
The cost of the loader is removed from the multiple drives, and
replaced with the cost of a single loader mechanism on the picker.
The overall complexity of the mechanics of the library are reduced
since the function of a loader that accepts a cartridge, opens the
shutter, loads the media on and off the spindle are replace with a
mechanism that only opens the shutter.  The loading on and off the
spindle is accomplished by the picker ar...
