This article describes the fine-tracking mechanism of optical disk drive which use thin glass plate between Laser Diode and collimator lens. The thin glass plate tilts and the spot of the disk can be moved in the direction of tracking.

Fine-Tracking Mechanism

      This article describes the fine-tracking mechanism of optical
disk drive which use thin glass plate between Laser Diode and
collimator lens.  The thin glass plate tilts and the spot of the disk
can be moved in the direction of tracking.

      The Figure shows the simple optical path in the optical drive
and (1) is the flat glass plate which can be tilted and the spot (2)
on the disk can be moved in required direction.

      The spot moving distance on the disk is a function of glass
plate (1) tilt angle (3) and the equation (4) and (5) explain the
relation of them.

      By this technique the tracking actuator can be smaller size to
achieve higher force constant per amplifier and low power
consumption.
