Abstract

Disclosed is a new technique not only to improve reliability but also to consume very little electricity for Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Unless read/write operation would not be done, the electric power of VCM is cut off. And the slider can be moved easily during the time because of balancing with flexible cables as Fig. 1.

      Disclosed is a new technique not only to improve reliability
but also to consume very little electricity for Hard Disk Drive
(HDD).  Unless read/write operation would not be done, the electric
power of VCM is cut off.  And the slider can be moved easily during
the time because of balancing with flexible cables as Fig. 1.

      The constitution of this technique will be described with
reference to Fig. 1 which schematically shows that the actuator of
HDD is balanced with flexible cable 1 and 2.

      Fig. 2 shows a simple model for the balance of the slider.  k1
and k2 shows flexible cable 1 and 2, respectively.  k3 and k4 shows
Air Bearing Stiffness.  k5 shows a load force with the suspension.

      Fig. 3 shows a potential energy in the direction of radius when
the slider keeps a track follow under controlling with servo.

      Fig. 4 shows a potential energy in the direction of radius in
the case of servo off.  The actuator in case of Fig. 4 can be moved
easier than that in case of Fig. 3.

      Slider continuously flies on the disk of HDD even if read/write
operationof data would not be done.  When the slider continuously
flies on it for a long time at the same position (the same radius), a
wear is observedat an early stage.  As slider position is normally
