Abstract

Disclosed is a window-management mechanism that enables one to select a group of windows quickly and easily among overlapping windows. It consists of a mechanism to dynamically set and change the characteristics of the frame of each window. It also provides a characteristic selection icon which displays the list of frame characteristics now in use. This icon enables one to select a group of windows of a particular frame characteristics, and to move them to the front of overlapping windows, as well as to assign a frame characteristics to a window.

      Disclosed is a window-management mechanism that enables one to
select a group of windows quickly and easily among overlapping
windows.  It consists of a mechanism to dynamically set and change
the characteristics of the frame of each window.  It also provides a
characteristic selection icon which  displays the list of frame
characteristics now in use.  This icon enables one to select a group
of windows of a particular frame characteristics, and to move them to
the front of overlapping windows, as well as to assign a frame
characteristics to a window.

      Fig. 1 is an example of characteristic selection icon.  It
shows all the frame characteristics now in use as well as the default
one, each of which differs in color, boarder width, boarder line
type.  By pointing an item in this list, a sub menu icon shows up,
which in turn lets a user either to reset the characteristics to the
default value, or to modify it, or to assign it to a particular
window.

      The characteristic selection icon also enables fast pointing of
a group of windows with a particular frame characteristics.  Consider
the case in which windows 1 to 5 are overlapping in the order of
window number (window 5 is forefront of a screen), and in which
windows 1, 3, and 5 share the same frame characteristics (Fig. 2).
