Remote Copy Link-Level Reconfiguration without Affecting Copy Pairs

      A method of re-configuring logical paths between two storage
control units without interrupting Remote Copy operation is
disclosed.  Logical paths may be added or removed or completely
swapped without requiring re-initialization or suspension of the
remote copy pair activity.

      In a storage control unit to storage control unit remote copy
environment, it is commonly desirable to modify the configuration of
the paths used to copy data from one storage control unit to another.
However, if the last path between primary and secondary storage
control units is lost, termination or suspension of the remote copy
must occur.

      After the path configuration is established, the remote copy
device pairs must be established.  This requires the following:
  1.  Host commands to the storage control unit to establish primary
       volumes and a remote secondary volumes as dual copy pairs.
  2.  Primary storage control unit initiated commands to the
secondary
       storage control unit to establish the pair.
  3.  Synchronization of the data on the primary and secondary
volumes.
  4.  Notification to the host of completion of the above steps.

      When many volumes under an storage control unit are being
remotely mirrored, the re-establishment of the volume pairs will
consume an unnecessary amount of time and system resources.    It is
desirable to be able to change the path configuration between primary
and secondary storage control unit's without requiring that the
device pairs be re-established.

      Establishment of the logical paths to secondary storage control
unit's can be done by processing the establish secondary paths host
command as an 'update paths' command if paths to the specified remote
storage control unit already...
