Abstract

Disclosed is a graphical user interface mechanism for displaying 2-D graphs or Figures by using the image of ideal surface of 3-d sphere onto which the graphs or Figures are mapped (Figs. 1, 2, 3). This ideal 3-D sphere can be rotated along its axis and this rotation gives the change of the view of the graphs or Figures.

Sphere onto which 2-D Graphs or Figures are Mapped

      Disclosed is a graphical user interface mechanism for
displaying 2-D graphs or Figures by using the image of ideal surface
of 3-d sphere onto which the graphs or Figures are mapped (Figs. 1,
2, 3).  This ideal 3-D sphere can be rotated along its axis and this
rotation gives the change of the view of the graphs or Figures.

This mechanism provides following four merits.
  1.  2-d graphs or Figures which would spread widely on the display
       screen can be displayed smaller.
  2.  User can easily change his focus on the graphs or Figures by
       rotating the underlying 3-D sphere.
  3.  User can easily get the overview of the graphs or Figures.
  4.  Because of the geometrical property of 3-D sphere, the part of
       the diplayed graphs or figures which is mapped in the centre
of
       the displayed area is enlarged.  This property fits for user's
       natural needs.

      Fig. 1 shows the original 2-D graph diplayed in usual
way.  Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 are the images given by the mechanism
described
above.  Fig. 2 is the case using opaque ideal 3-D sphere and Fig. 3
transparent.
