Abstract

Disclosed is how to improve the expandability of Multi-Micro Processing Unit (MPU) system. In the system which has a master MPU and more than one slave MPUs, where the master MPU is used for controlling or for managing the slave function of the system and the slave MPUs are used for implementing several functions as subsystem, the instructions of the master MPU are loaded in the ROM which is on the local bus of the slave MPU.

Improvement of the Expandability of Multi-Micro Processing Unit System

      Disclosed is how to improve the expandability of Multi-Micro
Processing Unit (MPU) system.  In the system which has a master MPU
and more than one slave MPUs, where the master MPU is used for
controlling or for managing the slave function of the system and the
slave MPUs are used for implementing several functions as subsystem,
the instructions of the master MPU are loaded in the ROM which is on
the local bus of the slave MPU.

      The Figure shows the example of the subject system.  ROM (1) is
on the local bus of MPU (3).  The instructions of MPU (2) and MPU (3)
are stored in the different areas of ROM (1).  The bus bridge (4)
connects between the local buses of MPU (2) and MPU (3).  MPU (3) is
reset by MPU (2) until MPU (2) completes to load its own instructions
from ROM (1) to the RAM (5) on its own local bus.  MPU (3) also loads
its own instructions from ROM (1) after the reset is released by MPU
(2).

      By locating ROM (1) on the local bus of the slave MPU (3), it
becomes unnecessary to modify the instructions on the master MPU's
local bus even if the program for the master MPU should be modified
according to the change of the subsystem's function.  Therefore, in
the subject system, it is easy to enhance/modify the functions of the
subsystems and to add new functions to the system.
