A method for organizing a graphical user interface desktop is disclosed. It is easy for the desktop to become quickly cluttered with icons. These can be from minimized applications or programs whose icons are visible but are not currently being used. The net result is disorganization (a la a real office desk).

Visually Aging Icons

A method for organizing a graphical user interface desktop is
disclosed.  It is easy for the desktop to become quickly cluttered
with icons.  These can be from minimized applications or programs
whose icons are visible but are not currently being used.  The net
result is disorganization (a la a real office desk).

The solution is to provide a mechanism that easily manages the
display of frequently used icons while rarely accessed ones
"disappear" from the desktop.  This allows you to pull out documents
or folders applicable to that day's work, while last week's work
automatically goes back into the "filing cabinet."  Long-running

such as the Shredder are most effective on the desktop.  The user
would (as he moves the objects or minimizes the application) be able
to specify that object should be placed out on the desktop for a
user-definable amount of time.  Once that time had expired, the
objects would return to their normal location (in the case of
objects) or be moved to the minimized icons folder in the case of
running applications.
