Abstract

This article describes the method to reduce the ROM size in Hard Disk Drive (HDD) by storing the uCode for the disk drive control in Host ROM area. uCode for the host communication portion is stored in the HDD ROM. Host communication will start after Power On Reset (POR) and Host will download the disk drive uCode to the HDD RAM area. After the download completion, the normal disk drive control will start.

      This article describes the method to reduce the ROM size in
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) by storing the uCode for the disk drive control
in Host ROM area.  uCode for the host communication portion is stored
in the HDD ROM.  Host communication will start after Power On Reset
(POR) and Host will download the disk drive uCode to the HDD RAM
area.  After the download completion, the normal disk drive control
will start.

      Current design is to store all the uCode in resident area and
the additional uCode or parameters are downloaded from the disk to
the RAM area when needed.

Fig. 1 shows the current operation and Fig. 2 shows the operation
flow of this method.

      Vendor unique commands will handle the operation of *1 and *2.
RAM area is shared by sector buffer for the hardware reduction in
this case.
