      Disclosed is a double slot book which holds two disk units can
be replaced by a single-wide or double-wide (connector on correct
side) book by placing and wiring the connectors in the proper
locations on the board.

      Strategically place the connectors of the disk unit book to one
slot side and use the vacant slot space for the I/O card connector
(Fig. 1).  Fig. 2 depicts four I/O books located in a card cage and
interfacing to the I/O connectors.  In this usage, the disk unit
connectors are not used.  Fig. 3 depicts eight disk units located in
the same card cage.  In this usage, the I/O connectors are not being
used.  The card cage and connector layout described can also support
a mix of I/O cards and disk units.

      This can also be done with unique feature cards where the
connector for the unique card is placed below the I/O card connector

(Fig. 1).  Hence a dual purpose slot for what was always a single
function.
