Universal Speech Adapter

      Disclosed is a speech input/output device capable of operation
without an associated computer.  Such a device can provide speech
recognition and synthesis capability within a device not otherwise
including a computer, or within a device including a computer with
insufficient capability to provide speech capabilities.

      The Figure is a schematic block diagram of a preferred version
of the device, in which a circuit card 10 includes a microprocessor
12, memory 14 for a speech-recognition system, read-only memory 16
for an operating system, read-write memory 18 for speech input and 20
for speech output, holding data concerning vocabulary, grammars,
language models, etc., read-write memory 22 for the particular
application being enabled, a microphone jack 28, an output jack 30,
and an interface connector 32 allowing the device to work with a
computer in online and offline applications.
