Abstract

Security for PCs in general takes one of two forms. In the simplest a password is entered and retained in a battery backed memory. This can be defeated by removing the battery for a short period. This is the most generally used. Higher priced PCs add additional components to retain the password and other information such as serial number, model or date of manufacture. This is intended for High security areas, does not rely on a battery backup and is not easily circumvented. With PCs going into an ever widening range of locations and uses such as the home, then something more secure than the simple battery backed password, but less costly than the higher security type of application, is required.

      Security for PCs in general takes one of two forms.  In the
simplest a password is entered and retained in a battery backed
memory.  This can be defeated by removing the battery for a short
period.  This is the most generally used.  Higher priced PCs add
additional components to retain the password and other information
such as serial number, model or date of manufacture.  This is

      Many PCs made today use Flash memory to hold the BIOS which is
used at power up to start up the whole system.  This Flash memory is
reprogrammable and usually soldered direct to the card.  If the end
user was provided with a utility to program the flash (such as that
provided for field upgrades) then they could program their password
into the Flash memory.  Since no battery is required then the
password is secure.

      Another feature commonly seen now on PCs is that during system
start up some type of logo is displayed.  A feature could be added to
the programming utility so that the user could have their name,
address or whatever they choose displayed instead of this logo, or as
