Abstract

An electronics package that allows attachment of either a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) card or Microchannel Adapter (MCA) card to an Input/Output Processor (IOP). The IOP senses which card is attached and automatically configures the card bus.

Peripheral Component Interconnect/Microchannel Adapter Book Package

An electronics package that allows attachment of either a
Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) card or Microchannel Adapter
(MCA) card to an Input/Output Processor (IOP).  The IOP senses which
card is attached and automatically configures the card bus.

A package can be built that provides both the PCI and the MCA
interfaces on the same IOP.  The figure shows the package.  The IOP 1
is configured with two connectors; a PCI 2 and an MCA 3.  Because the
component sides are opposite for the PCI card 4 and MCA card 5, and
the tail stock 6 on the PCI card is based on the MCA standard, the
cards
will physically fit and maintain contact without changing the
package.

The IOP will contain a chip set that converts a system bus to
MCA and a separate chip set that converts to PCI.  The IOP will
automatically sense which printed circuit card is attached and
properly configure the correct bus.
