Method for Converting Textual Hardware Procedures into Pictorial
Instructions

Disclosed is method to satisfy customer demands for
easy-to-install equipment.  This method uses a template to quickly
consolidate existing setup procedures into pictorial instructions.
The template can be easily adapted for use with a wide range of
hardware instructions, thus saving development time and expense.

This invention condenses textual hardware procedures into a
simplified pictorial instruction with minimal text.  Originally used
for the "7011 POWERstation and POWERserver Hardware Setup Guide,"
this method resulted in the reduction of a thirty-page 8 1/2 by 11
inch book into one 10 by 40 inch accordian-folded posterbook (see
attached example).  This method has since been used to produce the
"7009 Compact Server Hardware Setup Procedure" and the "7006 Graphics
Workstation Hardware Setup Procedure."

To facilitate development, a template was created that contains
the universal steps and the machine-specific instructions.  The
standardization of the template reduces the expense of developing
customer documentation and ensures a repeatable, consistent level of
quality, independent of the product or author.

Additional benefits of this invention include:
o  Quick adaptibility to different instruction sets.  The pictorial
setup template can be easily adapted to new products, resulting
in a dramatic reduction in the time required to d...
