Presentation Space Coloring

A method for colorizing areas on Advanced Function
Presentation* (AFP) pages is disclosed.  The method is
data-type-independent, resolution-independent, and provides for a
general way to specify colors.

In the AFP architecture, color is an attribute assigned to data
objects such as text, image, graphics, and bar code.  To cover a
region with color, an application has to build a data object such as
an image object, and then assign the desired color to the object
data.

This disclosure provides a method for assigning a color
attribute to any rectangular area on a presentation surface in a
data-independent and resolution-independent manner.  This is done by
allowing the attribute to be assigned to an AFP presentation space.
In AFP, data is presented on a physical medium such as a sheet using
a hierarchy of presentation spaces:
o  Medium Presentation Space.  The base presentation space.  Pages
and overlays are merged to this space.
o  Page Presentation Space.  Overlays and object areas are merged
to
      this space.
o  Overlay Presentation Space.  Object areas are merged to this
      space.
o  Object Area Presentation Space.  A data object is merged to this
      space.
o  Data Object Presentation Space.  Defined for text, image,
graphics, and bar code data types.

A presentation space is a conceptual address space with a
specified coordinate system and a set of addressable positions,
which, until now, was empty until data was placed into it.  This
disclosure allows a color attribute to be assigned to an AFP
presentation space by tagging the attribute to the descriptor
structured field for the presentation space.  A descriptor is the AFP
syntax structure that defines the units of measure, extents, and
other attributes for a presentation space.  The following descriptors
are affected:
  o  Medium Descriptor
  o  Page Descriptor
  o  Object Area Descriptor
