For example, a computing device may be shut down if it becomes too hot, after a task is completed to save electricity, or if a malfunction makes it desirable to disable the device from the software running on it.

System Shutdown Circuit

      Disclosed is a circuit providing a computing device with an
ability to shut down to protect the power supply and electronic
components driven by the power supply or to conserve energy.  For
example, a computing device may be shut down if it becomes too hot,
after a task is completed to save electricity, or if a malfunction
makes it desirable to disable the device from the software running on
it.

      The Figure is a block diagram showing the operation of the
Shutdown Circuit 1, which is latched in a shutdown state by a
Shutdown Signal 2 and unlatched by a Reset Signal 3.  Shutdown Signal
2 may be received from a software application running on the system
or from sensors indicating over-temperature, a lack of airflow, a low
battery condition, etc.  The shutdown mode is programmable to
determine which sensors can cause a shutdown.  The Power On/Off
Signal 4 is transmitted from the System Shutdown Circuit to the power
supply to effect a shutdown.  After Shutdown Circuit 1 is latched,
the only way to turn the power supply back on is through the
application of Reset Signal 3.

      The Shutdown and Reset Signals are preferably provided to the
System Shutdown Circuit through a standard planar (system) board
interface, such as an RS-232 interface.  Since the logic and software
of the Shutdown Circuit are thus not dependent on the particular
logic of the planar board, system upgrades can be applied with
