Abstract

Disclosed is a Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) which executes the measurement of the most suitable skew value for each track during formatting operation. According to these measured values, The DASD executes the formatting of the track. By using this measurement of the most suitable skew value, the performance of sequential access can be improved easily for all track of each DASD.

Adaptive Skew Formatting Method

      Disclosed is a Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) which
executes the measurement of the most suitable skew value for each
track during formatting operation.  According to these measured
values, The DASD executes the formatting of the track.  By using this
measurement of the most suitable skew value, the performance of
sequential access can be improved easily for all track of each DASD.

      The delay of changing track has differences in each DASD, in
each cylinder and in each head because of the mechanical differences
of them.  Then DASD has the suitable skew which can fit the delay.
Currently DASD has a fixed skew value in a particular group, so the
skew of each track is not suitable.  Usually the skew value is set
bigger making it possible to handle the worst tracks, by executing
the measurement of the most suitable skew value for each track during
formatting operation.  DASD can execute the formatting of the track
according to these measured values.  Therefore, the optimum
formatting can be achieved which fits to each DASD, each cylinder and
each head.
