Dual Use High Capacity Input/Output Station on an Automated Tape
Library

      This invention provides the ability for high capacity input and
output of tape cartridges on an automated tape library without
interrupting the accessor, while minimizing the storage space used to
provide the input and output.

      This invention uses a station that acts as either input or
output.  The station is controlled by the operator via an easy to
understand graphical user interface.  The operator can request access
(Figs. 1A, 1B, 1C flowchart) to the station or part of the station
and subsequently designate whether the station is to be used for
input or output.  The station is accessible to the operator from
outside the library, thus the accessor is able to continue completing
commands while the operator performs the input or output operations.
Once the operator has designated the "mode" (i.e., Input or Output)
for the station it is then serviced by the accessor according to the
previously determined priority of operations.

      Each unit of the station is a rack (Fig. 2) in the library.
Each unit contains three columns which hold up to 40 cartridges.
Each column has a door lock, door locked sensor, door locked
indicator, door open sensor, and a cartridge present sensor.  The
capacity of the station can by increased by adding the units to the
library.
