Abstract

Disclosed is a means to increase the packaging density of electronic circuits that use magnetic components. It is particularly suitable for small power converters that reside on the same circuit card assemblies as the circuits they service. This packaging technique eliminates the circuit board that would ordinarily hold power components and magnetic components of a modular power converter.

Magnetic Substrate Power Converter

      Disclosed is a means to increase the packaging density of
electronic circuits that use magnetic components.  It is particularly
suitable for small power converters that reside on the same circuit
card assemblies as the circuits they service.  This packaging
technique eliminates the circuit board that would ordinarily hold
power components and magnetic components of a modular power
converter.

      Electrical components (capacitors, resistors, power
semiconductors, integrated circuits, etc.) in chip form, or in other
packages, can also be attached to the metal conductors that are
plated on the surface of the magnetic substrate.  The monolithic
substrate that contains the magnetic components forms the circuit
board for the other components in the power converter.  Heat is
conducted away from the electrical components through the magnetic
substrate.

      In addition to imbedded magnetic devices, other magnetic
devices may be realized by attachment of magnetic material to the
surface of the substrate.  A simple low-cost inductor, for example,
may be formed from a smaller metalized plate when it is attached to
the magnetic substrate.  Current in appropriate conductors can
produce magnetic returning through the substrate.  The magnetic
substrate can be attached to mounting hardware such as a metal plate,
or it can be placed in a fully-enclosed package like any other power
hybrid.
