Grouping Objects for Tabbing and Cursoring in Visual Programming

Disclosed is a dynamic direct manipulation technique for
creating tab groups and ordering user interface elements for keyboard
cursor traversal in a visual programming environment.

This invention introduces a new technique that allows the user
to dynamically create, specify and change the order of tabbing and
cursoring through direct manipulation.

When the user activates the tabbing and cursoring function, a
default group (if it hasn't been created) appears, enclosing all user
interface objects in the window, and each object is tagged with a
number indicating the cursor traversal order (Fig. 1).

As shown in Fig. 1, tabbing through the elements will occur in
the order shown by the order tags.  In the default, there is only one
tab group, as shown here, but there could be numerous groups.

The user may change the tab group by resizing the tab group
border, thus creating another tab group.  Square numbered tags will
be attached to the tab groups, indicating tabbing order.  The cursor
traversal order tags ar also renumbered for the new group (Fig. 2).

As shown in Fig. 2, resizing the tab group border, the user can
create another tab group.  This illustration shows the result of
resizing
the one default tab group.  There are now two groups of elements.

The user may change the tabbing and cursoring orders by for
dragging a numbered tag t...
