Abstract

Most present magneto-optical files combine the fine (track following) actuator and the laser beam focusing actuator into one unit. The device disclosed here can be built into the fine or track following actuator or the main actuator, if this actuator also performs the track following function. The device disclosed is a separate electromagnetic entity. The magnetic circuit, cylindrical shape preferred, which forms the working gap provides room for the payload. The outside periphery of the magnetic circuit is contained (or fitted into) within the track following or main actuator.

      Most present magneto-optical files combine the fine (track
following) actuator and the laser beam focusing actuator into one
unit.  The device disclosed here can be built into the fine or track
following actuator or the main actuator, if this actuator also
performs the track following function.  The device disclosed is a
separate electromagnetic entity.  The magnetic circuit, cylindrical
shape preferred, which forms the working gap provides room for the
payload.  The outside periphery of the magnetic circuit is contained
(or fitted into) within the track following or main actuator.

      The preferred orientation of the magnetic circuit is such that
minimum stray magnetic leakage results at the read/write, media
location.  The closed part or the magnetic circuit is facing the
media.  The use of a shorted turn, within the magnetic circuit,
improves bandwidth.

      The device disclosed here features a minimum number of
components and ease of assembly is facilitated by tapered magnet and
shorted turn outside diameters and tapered magnetic circuits.
