Slider Load/Unload Ramp for Magnetic Recording Files

      A method is disclosed for unloading a magnetic recording slider
from a  disk by moving the slider body onto a ramp at the outside
edge of the disk.  The advantages of this method are compactness and
simplicity over suspension load/unload designs.

      This method would be useful in a magnetic recording file that
is required to withstand high G force impacts, where it is necessary
to unload the recording head off the disk to surface to prevent
damage.  This method does not involve any modification to the slider
suspension and is more compact than previous solutions involving an
extension to the slider suspension which engages a ramp (*).

      The method shown in Figs. 1 and 2 permit the unloading of the
slider body 1 onto a ramp 2 at the outer diameter of the disk 3.
This ramp is positioned so that when the head is moved past the outer
diameter of the disk the head moves off the disk and onto a
stationary ramp.  The ramp is made out of a material that will not
shed particles and may be lubricated and/or have narrow rails formed
to reduce static friction and guide or hold the slider body in place.
